Packing for a Caribbean Vacation

You’ve booked the flights, you’ve got a place to stay (thanks to those sweet hotel discounts you found online), and now all that stands in front of you and laying on the beach on your soon-to-be-fabulous Caribbean vacation is the dreaded thing we all try to put off as long as possible — packing. But, don’t worry too much about it, getting everything together and shoved into those old bags you still haven’t replaced won’t be nearly as hard as you might think. So take a breath, close your eyes, imagine yourself snorkeling with all kinds of different magical-looking fish, and let’s do this.

No Passport Needed

There are some interesting things you need to know about getting into the Caribbean as far as passports and visas go. First off, if you’re American and a full-fledged U.S. citizen, you don’t need to have a passport if you’re flying into Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, which includes the trifecta of St. John, St. Thomas, and St. Croix — the others require you to have more than basic U.S. IDs (driver’s license, etc.). If you’re hopping on a cruise, you can actually visit more of the islands without a passport, but be sure to double-check where you’re going before assuming you’re all good.

Caribbean Weather

Another important thing to thing to do before you start packing is familiarizing yourself with the weather happening for wherever and whenever you’re traveling in the Caribbean. There’s not a lot of major differences between the temperatures from one to the other and the average temperatures are around 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit most days, but depending on the month you’re traveling you might have more or less rain, which is a good to know. Brief showers happen nearly every day on most of the islands, too but not enough to pack any legit rain gear.

Packing Light

It’s easier said than done, but thanks to the consistently hot climate, the Caribbean is a place where less is more. In fact, many people who are traveling for a week or less easily get away with packing a couple of carry-ons, wearing a light jacket, and keeping it simple. Depending on your needs (I know, shoes)  and length of stay you could easily get away with not checking any bags, which would also save you a lot of hassle and potential delays if you’re flying.

Your Itinerary Determines Your Needs

Are you planning on doing some hiking? You’ll need some active clothes and a pair of good rubber-soled shoes that can give you the support you need. Are you just going to lounge on the beach all day and drink cocktails? You can probably get away with packing not much more than a couple of swimsuit options, flip-flops, and one or two pairs of shorts or dresses to wear when you’re not listening to the waves. There’s no one perfect list for this since each trip is unique, but think through what you’ll be spending your time doing and pack accordingly.

Toiletries

Your toiletry needs will pretty much be the same, but you might want to throw in some extra sunscreen, lip balm, or aloe/lotion depending on your plans to get out into the wild or your skin tone. It’s going to be hot and sunny most of the time, so ease into it and remember, you can always get more sun the next day, but it’s hard to deal with a really bad sunburn.

Gadgets

Last, but definitely not least, don’t forget to pack in your cameras, selfie-sticks, GoPros, Kindles, or any other electronics that you feel like you can’t live without. You’ll probably want to keep the phone off as much as possible, but it’s your Caribbean vacation, not mine, so you can do whatever you want.

Is Punta Cana worthy of the award for Top Caribbean Destination?

Punta Cana was recently named the top Caribbean destination in Trip Advisor’s “Travelers choice awards”. This award was based on a number of factors but ultimately, it relied on visitor reviews of the period of one year. But how did this happen and why is Punta Cana supposedly the best destination in the Caribbean for a vacation?

Is Punta Cana worthy of the award for Top Caribbean Destination?

Caribbean

Located in the very east of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana finds itself on white powder sands right next to a pristine ocean. Stretching for more than a hundred miles along the coast, the resort is hugely popular and has enough options to cater toward every budget, big and small. Whether you want a luxury hotel, a quiet guesthouse or a villa complete with infinity pool, you can find it here next to a plethora of attractions.

I guess there must also be a reason why so many people decide to get married here or choose it as a honeymoon destination? And yes there is, for it is here you will find many spa treatment center, enjoyable adventure activities, incredible restaurants and lively nightlife to top it all off. Indeed, Punta Cana is a Caribbean destination which does not seem to be lacking in any area and even the convenience of taking a trip here is inviting.

Situated a short twenty minute from the airport, the resorts require minimal travel time and with more than thirty countries flying to the region, it is always easy to get there in the first place. As mentioned above, another highlight of the resort is the food and it is common for each hotel to have its very own world class restaurant. If you decide to go all inclusive, this will obviously mean there are no excuses for sampling everything on offer but if you wish for a little more variety, it also means you can stop into any of the other resorts for something different.

What is the best value vacation in 2017?

Stunning in every possible way, the Caribbean is always going to be a hot-spot for tourism and an automatic choice for many tourists. You can find incredible hotel discounts and vacation offers for this region through our search portal, but cruise ships over the past few years in particular are the stand out performers and with the incredible value that they offer, it’s not difficult to see why this is the case:

Here are 5 reasons cruises are thought to be the best value vacation in 2017:

1.Cruise ships now rival all-inclusive resorts

When you book a cruise you are not only guaranteed a lineup of exotic ports and entertainment but also a wide range of inclusions. Naturally your accommodation is part of the package but when you factor in the food (and sometimes drinks), nightly entertainment, sublime swimming pools and free activities during the day, the return on investment for a cruise is undeniable.

2.It’s not just a cruise, there are also incredible destination

This one speaks for itself. You are promised some relaxing times on calm seas for most cruises and much of the attraction will in fact be in terms of spending on the sea. However, when you book a cruise you are also promised a number of incredible destinations to explore in between and while there is no obligation to jump off at any time, the fact that these can be part of the overall experience is priceless.

3.Cruise discounts and more

And just when you thought the price of a cruise couldn’t’t get any lower, you find a travel club such as ourselves to help you find the best cruise discounts. Don’t be fooled by the name, Hotels Etc offer a full range of travel service which extends from hotels and vacation packages to the above mentioned cruise discounts. You can sign up for a free trial but ultimately, this is the only place you will find legitimate cruise discounts online.

4.Day tours and shore excursions

As previously stated, you can jump off in every destination in which the cruise will stop and this allows you to take shore excursions. When you visit a city anywhere in the world, you want to see the sights, learn something about the destination or just have a day of exploring and these day tours are specially designed to help you see as much as possible while also getting you back to the ship in time. With prices starting from $25 per person, these day tours are incredible value.

Restaurant discounts

5.You pay for what you want and you go where you please

When you take a day tour the itinerary is sometimes set out in a particular way but otherwise, life on board a cruise is a very liberating experience. There are so many restaurants, bars, clubs and activities you can partake in and almost as many areas on the ship to relax. You don’t need to worry about over-spending on a cruise for the fact that you choose where to eat and then the freedom of organizing your own itinerary will leave you in no doubt that this was exactly how a vacation should be.

7 Things worth knowing before your first cruise vacation

Planning on taking a cruise vacation in the near future? Sitting on a cruise right at the very time of reading this post? Well, maybe this will help you or maybe it will just be little more than an entertaining “Told you so” but here are some tips and things we wish we knew before sailing off into the sunset on our first cruise:

1.Arrive several days prior

Okay so there are not all that many vacation days to take in North America but still, if you have even just a couple of days spare just make sure you take a flight into your departure city long before you are due to board the ship. Why? Not just to check out whatever city it is you are starting from but mostly, to reduce stress, to slow down, to start moving at your own pace and not be rushing across town as the ship is leaving. Even two nights in a city prior to the cruise departing is enough and will quite possibly be the best decision you make all vacation. Hotels Etc also offer great hotel discounts for these cities.

2. Read up on shore excursions before you arrive

Decisions are stressful and so too is deciding which tour/shore excursion you wish to take. Remove any risk of there being a panic and grab as many leaflets on board to read during the day while you sunbathe. Then fill out the form on board and get your name on the list before it sells out, because they do sell out and its usually because people are smart enough to read their leaflets while they sunbathe.

Ocean

3.Know exactly when will be you at Sea

Why? Because there are no shore excursions. Why? Because there is no shore. And why is this important? Because this is exactly when the Spa Treatment room is most busy and yes you’ve guessed it, full. Check the calender for when you are at sea and book the spa room long in advance. Smart huh?

4.Unpack your bag

Treat it like your home, take our candlesticks, your favorite pillow and anything else in that suitcase and find a place for it. Seriously, get every single item out of the bag and put everything away, then do the same with your suitcase. Last thing you want (which most people end up doing) is to waste hours rooting through your bags for that elusive bikini, underwear or camera.

5.Choose dinner time wisely

On shore excursions during the day? Book dinner on the cruise ship for the later time. Wanting to avoid the crowds? Book breakfast for the earlier time. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t do this but it certainly makes things easier.

Laundry

6.Get your laundry done all at once

Who are you travelling with? Put your laundry together and hand it in as one. Sounds cheap to say this but honestly, laundry facilities are no longer on board cruise ships and they charge an absolute fortune to do it for you – think $30 a load.

7.Bring an outfit for every dress code

Yes, there will be fine dining, sunbathing, cool evenings on deck, fancy jewelry and sporting activities. Make sure you take clothes for all occasions so as not to stand out too much and please, as we said before, make sure you unpack it all once you get on board.
