Are You a Traveler?

I’m making an assumption that at want point in your life you’ve been a tourist. You’ve carried a map, a camera, maybe even had a tour guide. You’ve traveled to different destinations, relaxed on remote beaches, climbed stairs in buildings you see on television. You’ve done all of these things but some how when you get arrive home, all your left with is a short memory, and a few photographs.

Vacations are nice every once in a while, but it doesn’t make sense to me why we will travel thousands of miles to sit in hotel rooms and watch movies, or lie on a pool deck and catch some rays. These are all things that we can do where we are from, I want you to think about being a traveler not a tourist. You want to soak in as much of the new country and culture that you can rather than bring as much of your culture to them. It’s really quite simple. In one step you need to forget about your way of live, and adopt theirs.

It’s simple things like the mindset that we have when we go abroad, and what we bring. Don’t bring all of the things that we depend on in America. Bring what it is that you are going to need to survive and stay healthy during your visit. The more comforts you have, the more you will depend on them, and the less you will step out to become the traveler you ought to be!

Put yourself out there. Locals are always interested to interact with foreigners, and it’s best to take advantage of this. Meet people that you can share life with while you are in their country. Immerse into their culture and be open to new idea’s. A lot of times we are closed to new idea’s and we miss out on opportunities for better things to come along. Be open, willing and accepting.

If you want to be changed, and to experience you need to leave the tourist at home. Bring out the inner traveler in you and see the world in the way that it was meant to be seen.

Great Tips for Saving Money When You Travel

The world has certainly become a smaller place and traveling to far corners of the globe on business or vacation is fast becoming commonplace. If you’d like to jump onto the traveling bandwagon but are worried about not having the budget for it, here are few tips for having a great holiday while still managing to not break your bank balance.

Major traveling expenditures include airfares, car rentals and hotel stay. Take a look at some of the ways you could save money in each of the three categories.

Saving Money on Airfare

Avoid traveling during the holiday season when fares are most expensive and many flights are blacked-out even for frequent fliers. The earlier you book your air tickets the higher the chances of finding the lowest airfare. The internet is the best place to look for low fares and special deals offered by different airlines to various destinations. Keeping your travel dates flexible increases your chances of finding the best deal possible.

Saving Money on Hotel Stay

Book your hotel s soon as you’ve finalized your travel plans. Cheaper hotel rooms tend to get sold off earliest. However do compare package deals of various hotels as well as the facilities that are included. You may find that a cheaper hotel may not offer you money-saving extras such as airport transfers, room amenities and meals or at the very least breakfast. Avoid booking hotels that are located in the heart of the city- they will almost certainly charge you a high premium for the convenience.

Saving Money on Car Rentals

Book the smallest sized car that you would need for your stay. Larger sized cars have higher hire charges and guzzle more gas. Compare rental rates online and book your car as much in advance as possible to get the best deal. Compare daily rates as well as weekly rates. Avoid booking a rental car at the airport. They charge exorbitant rates and add huge surcharges.

Take a look at some of the travel package deals offered on the internet. You could save a bundle by booking one that includes airfare, hotel stay and car rental.

Financial And Shopping When Traveling Overseas

Currency

Local banks usually offer better rates of exchange than hotels, restaurants, or stores. Rates are often posted in windows. Above all, avoid private currency transactions. In some countries, you risk more than being swindled or stuck with counterfeit currency _ you risk arrest. Avoid the black market --- learn and obey the local currency laws, wherever you go.

Shopping

Mail Small Items

When you purchase small items, it is a good idea to mail them personally to your home or to carry them in your luggage. This will help prevent misdirected packages, no receipt of merchandise, or receipt of wrong merchandise. When you mail purchases, be sure to ask about insurance.

American embassies and consulates abroad cannot serve as post offices. They cannot accept, hold, or forward mail for U.S. citizens abroad.

Items mailed home are not eligible for your $400 personal exemption. If the item that you are mailing home is less than $200, duty will be waived. Be sure to write on the outside of the package that it contains goods for personal use.

Value Added Tax (VAT)

Some European and Asian countries levy a value added tax (VAT) on the items that you buy. In some places, if you ship your purchases home, the VAT can be waived. Other places may require you to pay the VAT, but have a system to refund all of it or part of it to you by mail. You can ask the store clerk for an application to apply for the refund. The VAT refund is only for items that you can ship or carry with you. It does not apply to food, hotel bills, or other services. Because the rules for VAT refunds vary from country to country, you should check with the country's tourist office to learn the local requirements.

Beware When Making the Following Purchases:

Wildlife Souvenirs

Be careful when you buy articles made from animals and plants or when you purchase live, wild animals to bring back as pets. Some items, such as those made from elephant ivory, sea turtles, crocodile leather, or fur from endangered cats, and many species of live animals cannot be brought legally into the United States. Your wildlife souvenirs could be confiscated by government inspectors, and you could face other penalties for attempting to bring them into the United States. Do not buy wildlife or wildlife products unless you are certain that they are legal for import into the United States.

Glazed Ceramics

Beware of purchasing glazed ceramic ware abroad. It is possible to suffer lead poisoning, if you consume food or beverages that are stored or served in improperly glazed ceramics.

Unless the ceramics are made by a firm with an international reputation, there is no immediate way to be certain that a particular item is safe. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that ceramic tableware purchased abroad be tested for lead release by a commercial laboratory on your return or be used for decorative purposes only.

Antiques

Certain countries consider antiques to be national treasures and the "inalienable property of the nation." In some countries, customs authorities seize illegally purchased antiques without compensation, and they may also levy fines on the purchaser. Americans have been arrested and prosecuted for purchasing antiques without a permit. Americans have even been arrested for purchasing reproductions of antiques from street vendors because a local authority believed the purchase was a national treasure.

Protect yourself. In countries where antiques are important, document your purchases as reproductions, if that is the case, or, if they are authentic, secure the necessary export permit. The documentation or export permit may be available through the country's national museum. A reputable dealer may provide the export permit or information on how to secure one. If you have questions about purchasing antiques, the country's tourist office can guide you. If you still have doubts, consult the Consular Section of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. In places where Americans have had problems because of purchasing antiques, the Consular Section is usually well aware of such situations.

Consular officers can inform you about the local laws and the correct procedures to follow.

Customs

It is important that you keep all receipts for items you buy overseas. They will be helpful in making your U.S. Customs declaration when you return.

More Value In Your Travel With Charter Flights

Ideally, travel is something everyone would like to do more of. Who wouldn’t enjoy the adventure of learning more about different cultures and places? But isn’t it true, you really don’t realize what you’ve got at home, until you see first hand how other people live.

Unfortunately, travel does not fit into everyone’s budget. Over time, airfare has become more affordable, however extensive air travel is still pricey enough that most people don’t fly nearly as much as they drive. The sad truth is, it’s likely to remain this way. Instead of relying on winning the lotto to pay for your desire to travel more frequently, why not consider a more budget friendly alternative like Charter Flights.

Charter Flights are unique to typical airline travel because their operating system is different. Airlines, like the ones you would normally fly out of large cities, will have a specific route between two cities. The airline flies this route from point A to point B a set number of times per week regardless of how many passengers they carry. This is why airfare is so pricey. Airlines will fly their planes at less than half full and charge you the difference on your next ticket. It's costly to operate those machines, and you, the consumer pays the price whether you're on the plane or not.

Here's the beauty of Charter Companies; by chartering an airplane from reliable airline for specific time slots and dates, they will get the benefit of a large discount on the overall cost, that you could not get on your own. This discount, for a much reduced rate at the per seat price, is passed on to you by the charter company. You can expect most charter companies to offer similar destinations and routes dependant upon the season you're interested in traveling in. Commonly, winter flights will bring you to a warmer vacation spot.

Reliability is much better with charter flights, as opposed to other discount airfare methods. Airfare prices will decrease as the departure date approaches as well. When considering charter flights, it's important to note that charter companies can cancel any scheduled flight if they haven't sold enough tickets, and contrary to airlines, may be unable to seat you on another flight going to your planned destination, in a timely manner. If this is the case, you should expect a refund or a wait of several days for another charter. This could definitely put a damper on anyone's vacation.

With that in mind, there are a variety of dependable charter companies and flights that are a reliable alternative to typical airfare, though the discounts may not be as substantial. The bottom line is; if you're able to purchase a ticket without much notice and your flexible on dates and times, flying with a charter company may be much better suited to your budget.

Cheap International Travel Secrets

What is the real secret to cheap international travel? it's the same as the secret to doing anything for less. Learn to be an opportunist. Opportunistic travelers get to travel more, see more & do more. Of coursework, you can ignore this advice if you have unlimited currency.

I went to Ecuador because it was cheap. Honestly, are not there plenty of interesting places in this world? Why not choose eight you can travel to inexpensively? The other places will be there in the future, & you may have an opportunity to go to those places cheaply at some point.

Ecuador is my favorite international location. You can still get a decent meal for eight dollars. U.S. dollars, by the way, since that is conveniently the official currency of Ecuador now. From the beautiful snow-capped Andes mountains, to the Galapagos Islands, you'll seldom run out of places to explore in Ecuador. Travel there is safe & inexpensive.

Cheap Countries

South America in general is inexpensive, & the most affordable countries are, in my opinion, the most beautiful. These are the countries along the Andes mountains; Ecuador, Peru, & Bolivia. Argentina, thanks to it's recent economic troubles, is once again a cheap place for travelers as well.

In Central America, it costs little to travel & holiday in both Nicaragua & Guatemala. Nicaragua, in particular, has become more stable & safe for travelers in recent years. Costa Rica is a wonderful , & though it's eight of more expensive counties of Central America, that probably still leaves it cheaper than Europe.

In Asia, India is still low-cost, if you stay in the numerous hostels & boarding houses. Thailand & Indonesia are also cheap. With all international destinations, the plane tickets will be your single biggest travel expense. This is true with the asian countries. Being there is cheap, but getting there may not be.

Cheap International Travel Tips

Wherever you go, there are things you can do to keep it cheap. Eat where locals eat, for example, instead of at the tourist restaurants. To keep it cheap, eat fruit from street markets (wash it well) & packaged snacks from grocery stores.

Visit the free & cheap attractions first. It's possible you'll have so much fun that you'll seldom get around to doing the expensive things. A higher price means better quality with travel bags, but not with travel experiences.

For cheap accommodations find out where local visitors from within the country stay. Negotiating room charges is common in some areas. In Banos, Ecuador, we negotiated our room rate down from $12 to $6 per night, by paying for several nights in advance. Consider hostels, if you don't mind sharing a room. they are much more common overseas.

Busses are cheaper than taxis in any country, but be careful of crowded city busses, where pickpockets hang out. jogging is even cheaper, & it's a great way to learn about a city. ask the locals where the dangerous parts are before you wander far.

Cheap international travel is often only as cheap as your plane tickets. Use the techniques outlined on our site to save big on tickets, or search the fares to several interesting countries. If eight is $500 less than the others, consider going there. $500 can buy a few extra days, or an extra mini-vacation some other time.
